Research shows that nearly 75% of Americans will be driving on a getaway this summer and about a third plan to travel more than 250 miles from home. While there are plenty of places to visit in our huge country, some make for more fun getaways than others and a new report reveals the top ones to hit and the ones to skip.

  • They compared all 50 states on 32 key metrics to find the “most fun, scenic and wallet-friendly road-trip destinations.”
  • States were rated on factors ranging from the number of attractions to road conditions, in the main areas of costs, safety and activities.
  • So, where is the best place for a summer road trip this year? Minnesota tops the list, thanks to its many parks and outdoor activities, and fairs and festivals held during this season.
  • It’s also a safe state for driving and has low costs for camping and hotels.
  • The number one state for cost is Louisiana, while Idaho is first for safety and California lands at the top for activities.
  • On the flip side, the worst state for a summer road trip is Delaware, which ranks near the bottom for both safety and activities.
  • Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont and Montana round out the bottom five.
