People across the country will be celebrating the moms in their lives on Mother’s Day this Sunday, but it may not be as extravagant as in years past. According to a new LendingTree survey, nearly three-quarters (71%) of Americans are going to give gifts this year, but they won’t be spending as much on them.
The poll of 2-thousand U.S. consumers reveals:
- People will spend an average of $148 on Mother’s Day gifts, which is down 14% from 2023 and 34% from 2022.
- Those gifts will mostly be going to their moms (42%), spouses/partners (17%) and mothers-in-law (12%).
- More than half (56%) say they’re spending less because of inflation and the current economy, while 38% blame tariffs.
- But half (50%) admit they may still spend more than they can afford.
- The moms surveyed report that the top items they hope to get are flowers or plants and cards or letters. Lucky for them, those are also the top gifts loved ones plan to buy.
- Moms get more love than dads on their special holiday, with 62% of Americans spending more on Mother’s Day than Father’s Day. Only 9% spend more on Father’s Day.
- But the day isn’t just about the presents, as 84% plan to spend quality time with someone for Mother’s Day, including their mom (40%), their spouse or partner (33%) and their daughters (22%).
- For 60%, all kinds of kids count and they feel pet moms should be celebrated on Mother’s Day, too.
