Physical Traits Americans Find Most Attractive

Most of us think we know what we’re looking for when it comes to dating, whether we’re focused on height, smile, jawline, or eye color. But it turns out, below the “surface-level swipe-right” features, there may be some subtle features affecting our attractions and we don’t even know it. A new survey digs deeper to find out what really turns us on.

Lens.me, an online contacts store, polled over 3-thousand men and women from every state to see what unconventional traits people are most into. The research suggests that across the country, preferences for understated features can vary as much as accents.

  • Posture is a top subtle turn-on in states including Alabama, Colorado, Mississippi and North Dakota.
  • Folks in more than 10 states, including Arkansas, Arizona, Florida and New York find facial expressiveness the most attractive low-key trait.
  • Proving it’s not what you say, but how you say it, voice tone is the top trait those in places like Louisiana, Missouri, North Carolina and Tennessee are into.
  • Laughter is the number one turn-on for Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan and Texas. But it can’t be forced, it has to be genuine, distinctive and a little weird wouldn’t hurt.
  • Virginia and Kentucky both rate scent as the most attractive subtle trait, but they’re into the natural, barely-there kind, so smelling like yourself may be better than a perfume.
  • Hand gestures make a big difference in Kansas, where they’re into both shape and movement.
  • In Alaska, it’s not hair or eyes, it’s eyebrows that residents find attractive.
  • Forget eye color, in New Jersey they don’t care about the shade, just the shape and gaze of the eye.
  • In West Virginia, they’re watching your walk, as the stride is what they’re into.
  • Vermont votes for a surprising feature - crow’s feet, those soft, wrinkles near the eyes - showing maybe they’re more into emotional depth than perfection.
  • The survey also looks at what the top turn offs are, and a blank, emotionless stare lands at number one (20%). Fake accents and fake laughs or smiles are second (19%), reminding us that trying too hard can definitely backfire.
  • Bad posture, a monotone voice and overplucked eyebrows are also turn-offs.
