Bellingham, Washington, resident Jen Ewing was recently out on her morning walk when she found a lost paycheck on the sidewalk. Recalling a conversation with an Uber driver about check fraud, she decided to return it personally. The check was issued by a local restaurant, El Capitan's, so Ewing took it straight there as soon as it opened.
The restaurant employees and the check’s owner were surprised and deeply grateful. Ewing was thanked warmly and even got a free hot dog in appreciation. She later shared her experience on social media, where the story quickly went viral, racking up over a million views and hundreds of comments praising her for the thoughtful gesture.
Ewing, who’s self-employed, says she earned a small amount from TikTok’s creator program and plans to use that money for a future act of kindness. “I just needed that,” she says, reflecting on how the positive interaction reminds her of the strong sense of community in her Washington town. She plans to return to the restaurant to pay the kindness forward again.
