The dangers that could be lurking in the sand and surf. Fortunately, new research warns us which destinations are the riskiest.

  • Researchers with Tideschard analyzed data on more than 500 shorelines in the U.S. to see which have the highest risk of shark attacks, surf-zone dangers, like rip currents, and hurricanes.
  • They’ve determined that all of the 10 most dangerous beaches are in Florida.
  • New Smyrna Beach tops the list, as the research shows its Atlantic Coast location makes it most likely to get hit by “brutal hurricanes.”
  • It also earned the “Shark Bite Capital of the World” title, and had 12 surf fatalities from 2010 to 2024.
  • Laguna Beach, in the Panama City Beach area, is the second most dangerous beach, and had 39 surf-related deaths, the most of all the beaches in the study.
